Crayon Pop "UH-EE" MV Review

POP! POP! KEU-RAY-ON-POP!

Crayon Pop have just released their comeback single "UH-EE" and I've taken it upon myself to review the newest addition to the discography of Lady Gaga's newest opening act.

More after the break!

Now the first thing I noticed about this MV was that it was set in such a classy and sophisticated environment. Everyone was wearing formal attire and they were dressed to impress, guys like Bumkey and 2BiC were performing on stage and the hunnies looked fly in their elegant dresses, oh and the beat for the intro was dope too.

Snakehead (K. Much) were the bouncers but they quickly showed how redundant they are in that role by letting a dangerous looking Uncle Fan (with two fucking red stripes on his head, mind) INTO the building. However seeing as he was imitating jumping on a pogo stick on the way in, it's safe to say that he won't do too much damage provided he leaves the Jack Daniels alone.

Back to my main point, even Crayon Pop themselves turned up in very nice dresses that fit their form, showed their curves but retained some of the "classy" nature found in this style of setting. Of course the aim of every "sexy" concept is to make the fanboys fantasize about smashing your back doors in so class or no class it ends up getting to Point B anyway, but some people just prefer having a more scenic route.

Immediately however, I felt slight disappointment at seeing them in dresses coupled with the MV's environment. I felt as if I was losing Crayon Pop to the oncoming tidal wave of unoriginal sexy concepts that are flooding K-Pop today, and alongside Orange Caramel, Lee Hyori and others, Crayon Pop were the only source of original concepts that were actually enjoyable for me in K-Pop.

I guess if the teasers didn't put out this image...

Fuck what you thought about Airport Fashion... This is how you leave Incheon Airport in style.

Then I wouldn't be as upset by it. I enjoy the goofiness Crayon Pop brings to K-Pop, it's so refreshing and interesting in comparison to Brave Brothers instrumental #131 ala SISTAR or 4Minute.

And then... The crowd moves away and reveals Crayon Pop in their true form.

I swear to you, this is the first time I have ever enjoyed being trolled like this... Pure brilliance!

The somewhat electro/hardstyle vibe I got from the first part of the song was thrown away and revealed to be some modern variation of Trot fused with Techno, and honestly I love it...

Ahjumma Pop! Best concept this year so far, and the things that sells it for me is the fact that their outfits contrast with the background so much that you can't help but find it completely amusing.

Furthermore, Soyul definitely has a voice for Trot... You wouldn't think it would fit a face like this--

But she sings a lot like a young Uhm Jung Hwa mixed with a bit of Kim Wan Sun... Freaking awesome might I add! A possible future endeavour for her perhaps?

What I do love about this song is that not only is it somewhat catchy and creatively whets the appetite, but it stays true to the roots of Trot music, this song could be given to someone like Ha Chun Hwa and no one would be able to tell the difference... I think.

Yet even though it stays true to the foundations of Trot, it still has that identity of Crayon Pop in there, it has their signature style incorporated in there and all the best groups have that signature which is what most of the rookies are missing.

This song could be compared with Bar Bar Bar, Bing Bing or Dancing Queen and some similarities would be found there, not necessarily in the production or even the vocals, but just the flair and how the entire thing is presented. This, if well received, will definitely add to their staying power in the industry.

But anyway, I'm going way off track here now... Back to the MV.

The instrumentation was great, the dance was very energetic and fun but also looks hard choreo to sync and perform even... Deceptively skilled seems to be the motif of Crayon Pop here.

Finally, I really just enjoy the way that they go absolutely bonkers and just start flailing their limbs everywhere along to the beat, it really gives a sense of joy and a vibe that they are actually having fun with their concept and it isn't something that's forced onto them by their company... Or if it is, they don't mind it that much and they are rolling with ball they've taken.

This song isn't the next Bar Bar Bar nor will any of their other song be like that... Each and every one of Crayon Pop's songs are unique to each other, the concept is remarkably similar and sometimes the production and the feel of the song will be similar as well, that's Crayon Pop's style... However, what separates them is the identity of each song and that goes for every artist out there. Trying to reclaim your fame by re-envisioning your greatest hit is not gonna work no matter who you are.

MJ's biggest hits never sounded like a poor man's rendition of the last one, so why should yours?

Crayon Pop are going places in this bizarre genre that we listen to and they definitely have the potential to be a favourite for Korea AND International fans in the long-run...

So keep your eyes peeled before ChoA/Way starts poking them out.

MV Score: 8/10
Song Score: 7/10

Final Thoughts: Great song and concept, but it needed to be a bit more catchy or at least have the slightest bit more impact, it felt a bit flat at times... Soyul's trot voice is always a plus though.
